Right now, I'm about halfway through Seriously... I'm Kidding- good progress!
A chapter that stood out to me was chapter 10. I do have to mention that Ellen didn't number her chapters, so the only way I knew it was the tenth chapter was because she said, "This chapter, chapter ten, is my favorite chapter in one of my favorite books so I feel an enormous amount of pressure to make it spectacular." (De Generes). And of course, she can't resist cracking a joke,"There are other books I've read where chapter ten was not that great at all. But I prefer not to tell you to which book I'm referring. Maybe the author of that book failed to read the chapter in the book I aforementioned." (De Generes).
Anyways, the reason this chapter stood out to me was because it had some intelligent, original thoughts blended with a lot of jokes. The most important line from this chapter is, "I don't know why bigger words seem like they're more important. Really, all words are important..."(De Generes). This leads to a whole paragraph of thoughts, and Ellen then tries to make a sentence without using any small words (she can't). The whole chapter revolved around this idea, that although big words are fancy and ostentatious, small words are equally as neccessary.
Maybe I'm over analyzing this, but I think that there was a deeper meaning to this chapter. I think Ellen used this chapter as a metaphor for people. I think that the real, hidden idea, was that all people- big or small, fancy or plain- are equally important and valuable, because without them, the world would not be the way it is now.

Seriously...I'm Kidding
As I mentioned before, the novel I am currently reading is Seriously... I'm Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres. I just started this book a few days ago, and I am enjoying it so far. The book is not a memoir or an autobiography. Actually, I am not even sure exactly what genre it is. It's basically Ellen rambling on and on about everything that comes to her mind. And I say that in the best possible way. The chapters are short and unrelated to each other, but they are full of jokes and amusing insight. The mood is lighthearted and unserious, just like her. It's just a goofy, cute book that puts you in a good mood.
I admit, I am usually not the kind of person who would read books like this, but I am glad that I did get it as an eBook. I chose it because the title and the cover intrigued me. I read some of the preview, and a certain line caught my eye: "There's lotion for your face, lotion for your hands, lotion for your
feet, lotion for your body... Each kind says it has something special in it for your skin- aloe, shea
butter, coconut, cocoa butter, vanilla, lemon extract. That's not
lotion. That's one ingredient short of a Bundt cake," (DeGeneres 17). I knew that Ellen was very funny and interesting before I started reading, but after I actually got the book it was hard to put down.
Addicting? Very. Serious or sophisticated? Not really. The book had a lot of potential to go either way, but Ellen chose to make the whole thing a big joke (I'm saying that in the best possible way, too). I think it's a refreshing change for me. Hopefully it stays that way!
Information on Author:
I'm sure almost everyone has heard of Ellen DeGeneres, who is the author of my book. She is a comedian, television host and actress. She has hosted the Ellen DeGeneres Show since 2003. She was also a judge on American Idol and a host for the Academy Awards. She has written 3 books- Seriously...I'm Kidding; The Funny Thing Is... ; My Point...And I Do Have One.
